In the design of high-speed interface circuits, more and more attention is paid to the electromagnetic field effects of electrostatic discharge, such as electromagnetic interference (EMI) and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). This sudden discharge can be caused by direct contact or by the generation of an electrostatic field. Although ESD damage to the human body is rare, it can be fatal to sensitive electronic devices. HDMI graphics chips are manufactured using silicon wafers with very small geometries, which are very sensitive to ESD. Most of these graphics chips have ESD protection integrated inside; however, this measure only provides protection in a controlled manufacturing environment. In the real world, users often touch interfaces like HDMI and thus cause ESD.
Various levels of damage are defined in the IEC61000-4-2 standard. Accumulated voltages of 15KV are not uncommon when a person walks on carpet. ESD can easily damage or even destroy internal integrated circuits.
Introduction to hDMI:
High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) is an uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface. It provides a high-speed interface between video/audio source equipment and sink equipment, such as connecting DVD players and digital displays. Circuit manufacturers continue to shrink the minimum dimensions of transistors, interconnects, and insulating layers in their devices, resulting in smaller structures for high-speed devices that are more susceptible to breakdown effects at lower energy levels .
The internal ESD protection of the HDMI interface is not enough to protect the graphics chip from destruction. In order to ensure the performance of this port, consumer electronics manufacturers need to strengthen the ESD performance of the HDMI port, that is, how to meet the signal integrity and impedance requirements of the HDMI Compatibility Test Specification (CTS) and at the same time, according to the globally recognized ESD standard IEC61000- 4-2 hardened HDMI ports.
ESD Protection Requirements for HDMI
Very high diode switching speed (nanoseconds) and ultra-low line capacitance (<1pF) ensure signal integrity.
No degradation in ESD protection after several ESD strikes.
Leakage remains low even after hundreds of ESD discharges.
Highest level of integration in a small footprint.
RF Routing Optimized Package at PCB Level.
Fully Compliant with HDMI 1.3 Specification Requirements.
ESD0523P for HDMI
It can be directly used for 2 pairs of 100 ohm differential impedance signal lines, regardless of its board type, number of layers, thickness and circuit board material. To promote high-speed and fast circuit design, ESD0524P is a small lead-free package with only 0.5mm pitch Ideal for streamlined layouts, this tight-pitch package design can help reduce wiring discontinuities and increase common-mode noise rejection.
For streamlined high-speed signal line design and to meet signal line impedance requirements, the special design of ESD0524P provides ESD 4-wire protection requirements, in line with IEC61000-4-2 ESD standards (±8KV CONTACT ESD and ±15KV Air ESD), while providing excellent embedded voltage characteristics, reduce the overvoltage stress of the HDMI chip, and improve the reliability of the overall HDMI system.
