1. What is metal oxide varistor?
A Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV) is a protection component used in power supply circuits that is powered directly from AC mains. It is used to protect the circuit from high voltage spikes by varying its resistance.
2. How does metal oxide varistor work?
When exposed to high transient voltage, the MOV clamps voltage to a safe level. A metal oxide varistor absorbs potentially destructive energy and dissipates it as heat, thus protecting vulnerable circuit components and preventing system damage. Varistors can absorb part of a surge.
3. What are metal oxide varistors used for?
It shows wide applications in protecting devices as communication line protection, in microprocessor and power supply protection. In AC protection and cable TV surge protection etc.
4. Do varistors have polarity?
There is no polarity. So you can mount MOVs in any direction. Other kinds of TVS, such as unipolar TVS diodes do have polarity, and it is typically indicated with a ring, like normal diodes.
5. How do you test metal oxide varistor?
Connect the two test leads (regardless of positive and negative) to the two ends of the resistor to measure the actual resistance value. To improve the measurement accuracy, the range is selected according to the nominal value of the measured resistance. Due to the non-linear relationship of the ohm scale, the middle section of the scale is fine. Therefore, the pointer value should fall as far as possible to the middle of the scale, that is, within the range of 20% to 80% of the radian of the full scale. According to the resistance error level, an error of ± 5%, ± 10%, or ± 20% is allowed between the reading and the nominal resistance, respectively. If the error range is exceeded, the resistor has changed the standard value.
6. What happens when a varistor fails?
Under different current conditions, failure modes include electrical puncture ,physical cracking, and thermal runaway. Cracking happens because varistors are basically a ceramic material, and hitting them with a sharp high-amplitude surge is like hitting a dinner plate with a hammer.
