How to select the MC power filter for a motion controller

Selecting a power filter for a motion controller (MC) requires consideration of the noise spectrum, current requirements, and installation environment. First, determine the frequency band and amplitude of conducted noise through pre-testing or estimation, and then select a filter with sufficient insertion loss in the corresponding frequency band. A margin should be provided for the rated current, typically 1.5 times the operating current. For industrial environments, the filter should meet relevant safety certifications, such as UL and CE.

There are two mounting methods: PCB mount and chassis mount. PCB mount filters, such as the PBZ series, are suitable for on-board integration, while chassis mount filters are suitable for system inlet. Note that the filter's DC resistance will affect the voltage drop; its acceptable level must be evaluated. For three-phase drive systems, a three-phase filter must be selected. The actual installation location of the filter within the equipment must also be considered during selection, ensuring that its input and output cables are separated to avoid coupling. High-temperature environments require high-temperature components. The final selection should be verified through actual conducted emission testing to ensure that it meets the limit requirements under both full-load and light-load conditions.
