Why is it necessary to emphasize both system-level protection and signal integrity management in the EMC design of anesthesia machines?

Modern anesthesia machines are highly integrated, densely packed with internal microprocessors, sensors, motor drives, and communication modules. These circuits act both as sources of interference and as sensitive receivers. Isolated, localized protection is no longer sufficient to ensure the stable operation of the entire machine in complex electromagnetic environments. System-level protection ensures the formation of a multi-layered attenuation and suppression network from the power entry point and internal conversion nodes to all external interfaces, thereby cutting off interference propagation paths. Simultaneously, the coexistence of high-speed digital and weak analog signals necessitates meticulous signal integrity management. For instance, selecting ESD protection devices with extremely low capacitance for high-speed data lines prevents signal edge degradation and ensures the acquisition accuracy of critical physiological signals such as blood oxygen and pressure. The combination of both approaches is key for the device to comply with stringent medical EMC standards like IEC 60601-1-2 and for safe clinical use.
