Surge testing of data center switches requires the selection of appropriate protection devices based on port type and test level: For power ports, MOV varistors such as the Etymotic 14D561K (varistor voltage 560V, current capacity 4.5kA) are preferred due to their optimal cost, or TVS such as the 15KP58CA (15000W) with lower residual voltage are recommended; for signal ports, GDTs such as the 3R090L-6X8 (5kA) are preferred to discharge common-mode energy, combined with TVS such as the ESDLC3V3D3B (600W) to clamp differential mode; PoE ports need to accommodate 48V power supply, so TVS such as the SMCJ58CA (1500W) or high-current PoE58C are recommended; the selection must meet the corresponding level of IEC61000-4-5 and allow for a margin of more than 20%. The measured lifespan of varistors is about 1000 surges, while the lifespan of TVS is >5000 surges.
