The Importance of Circuit Protection Components

The trend of incorporating over-current and over-voltage protection components in various electronic products is increasingly prominent. The reasons for this can be summarized as follows:

(1) With the evolving demands of electronic products, the functionality (integration level) of ICs has become more advanced, making them increasingly valuable and thus necessitating enhanced protection.

(2) To reduce power consumption, minimize heat generation, and extend service life, the operating voltages of semiconductor components and ICs are continuously decreasing. According to statistics from the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA), the current operating voltage is around 1.5V, and it is expected to drop below 1.2V by 2004. As a result, their ability to withstand over-current and over-voltage must adapt to new protection requirements.

(3) The proliferation of portable electronic products, such as mobile phones, PDAs, laptops, camcorders, digital cameras, and disc players, requires battery packs as their power source. Both battery packs and battery chargers must be equipped with protection components.

(4) In modern luxury cars, the number of installed electronic devices is increasing, and their operating conditions are harsher than those of general electronic products. For instance, driving conditions and environments change rapidly, and significant instantaneous peak voltages can be generated during vehicle startup. Therefore, power adapters designed for these electronic devices generally require both over-current and over-voltage protection components.

(5) Numerous electrical and electronic products require protection against lightning strikes and interference between power lines and telephone lines to ensure normal communication and user safety. Consequently, with the advancement of electrical and electronic products, the demand for over-current and over-voltage protection components is on the rise.

(6) Statistics indicate that 75% of failures in electronic products are caused by over-current or over-voltage conditions. IBM once analyzed the causes of computer power supply failures and found that 88.5% were due to over-current or over-voltage issues. As users become more demanding regarding the quality of electronic products, manufacturers must extensively adopt circuit protection components to enhance their market competitiveness.
