In 2023, China's chip imports will decrease by 15.4% in value and 10.8% in volume

According to the latest data released by the General Administration of Customs of China, both the quantity and amount of imports and exports of integrated circuits (ICs) in China will decrease in 2023. It is worth noting that China is continuously increasing its local chip production to cope with long-term development in the future.

In terms of import data, China will import a total of 479.5 billion integrated circuits in 2023, a decrease of 10.8% compared to 2022; The import amount was 349.4 billion US dollars, a decrease of 15.4%. In addition, the import volume of diodes and similar semiconductor components (representative of ordinary commodity chips) in China also decreased by 23.8% in 2023.

In terms of export data, China has exported a total of 267.8 billion integrated circuits in 2023, a decrease of 1.8% compared to 2022; The export amount was 136000 US dollars, a decrease of 10.1%.

In 2023, under the influence of economic headwinds, global consumer electronics, especially smartphones and laptops, will continue to be weak. In addition, under relevant export control measures abroad, China is severely restricted in the purchase of some advanced chips. At present, China is continuously increasing local production to reduce the impact of dependence on imported chips.

According to the data of the General Administration of Customs, the chip production in Chinese Mainland increased in 2023. From January to October, China produced a total of 276.53 billion integrated circuits, a year-on-year increase of 0.9%. The production of integrated circuits in October was 31.28 billion blocks, a year-on-year increase of 34.5%, setting a new high in recent years.
