EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) of laparoscopic systems should be addressed starting with individual units and system interconnections. The video processing circuitry of the camera unit should be shielded, and its connection cables to the lens (now mostly digital) require high shielding performance. The power supply for the xenon lamp or LED driver, a cold light source, should be low-noise and shielded. The motor/solenoid valve drive circuits of the insufflator and suction pump should be properly filtered. Power cables for all sub-devices should ideally use independent sockets or be powered through isolation transformers. Signal and control cables connecting each subsystem should be medical-grade, highly shielded cables. The entire system should be kept as far away as possible from the electrosurgical unit and cables, and metal structures such as the operating table should be properly grounded.
