EMC modifications to dental treatment units require zoned treatment. For each dental handpiece's power and control air/circuit module, a ferrite bead (PBZ series) should be connected in series at its power input and a TVS diode (SMBJ series) should be connected in parallel. ESD protection devices should be added to the signal contacts of the handpiece connector. Ferrite rings can be fitted onto the AC power cord of the negative pressure saliva aspirator motor. When driving solenoid valves (controlling water and air), freewheeling diodes should be connected in parallel across the coils of the treatment unit's main control board's I/O ports. All low-voltage control circuitry (e.g., touchscreens, sensors) should use shielded cables or incorporate common-mode filtering.
